RACE DAY

Here's a few TIPS to make race day amazing

  • Recruit friends and family to run with you…. it’s way more fun.
  • Show up at least an hour before your wave.
  • This is a rain or shine event… no refunds.
  • Run, walk or jog the course…skip an obstacle if you want… no judgment here.
  • Bring extra cash for parking ($10/vehicle), bag check, vendor food and BIGDOG offical gear.
  • There is a secure bag check ($3) for your ID, change of clothes, cash, etc.
  • Wear shoes and work out gear that you don’t mind getting trashed…
  • There will be a rinse off area for participants.
  • Bring a big trash bag for the dirty stuff.
  • Leave your jewelry at home.
  • Drink fluids before and after the race…
  • No pushing, shoving, or crying while in the mud pits.
  • There will be medical staff and aid stations along the course and finish line.
  • No pets will be allowed on the playground. This is a human challenge.
  • Wear a cool costume!
  • No whining, no complaining, no grumpy people!
  • Have a ton of fun!

Are dogs allowed?

NOPE! We know it’s called the BIGDOGBRAG but this is a human challenge course! Service dogs are allowed in the staging/front end area but not on the course.

What should I expect on race day?

Controlled chaos! Thousands of fellow mud obstacle enthusiasts will be joining you on the BIGDOGBRAG PLAYGROUND.  You’ll arrive at the venue and be directed to your parking space. From there, you’ll see the big white tent with CHECK IN/REGISTRATION/BAG CHECK flags. If you have already picked up your packet at pre-race packet pick up, you can go directly to the celebration zone to party and get ready for your race, but if you need to get your bib/shirt/check a bag, etc. just come to the tent and we’ll help you get set!

Every 15 minutes a wave of 150 participants will toe the line with you… You’ll run, get muddy, sweat, have a ton of fun, laugh really hard, groan and moan, cheer others on, help others along the way, and finish strong at the dog trick pit where you can show off your MUDDIEST smile of the year!

There is a wash off station where you can rinse the first layer of mud off, a photo banner to capture your muddy memories, a vendor area to hang out and meet some of our awesome community partners, get some free swag, relax and tell stories, wait for friends and family to finish the course, enjoy some fun music and learn BIG DOG dance moves…most importantly, you will have done something BIG and we are super glad you are now a part of the BIG DOG family!!

How many people will be running with me?

There are waves of 100-150 every 15 minutes. The waves start at 8:30 a.m.  We hold back families with small children for 5 minutes at each wave release to make sure they have enough space and time to have a blast on the first 12 obstacles of the course.  There will be a well-marked cut-off for those that ONLY want to do the 2k and a volunteer directing you as well.  YOU decide how much run you want in your fun on race day.  Maybe you want to do more than 1 lap…GO FOR IT!! No additional charge! We will all just stand in awe of your BIG-DOG-NESS!!

What will I need to do when I arrive at the race?

After you park  you can either go straight to the celebration/staging area (if you have already picked up your bib and t-shirt) or if you haven’t picked up your packet come straight to the check in tent (there will be signs everywhere), check in, get your bib and get ready run!

What happens if it rains?

We bark, howl, and do a dance of celebration! More MUD..More FUN! Seriously, if the weather or terrain is too dangerous because of weather, we will cancel the event for everyone’s safety.

Where can I store my valuables during the event?

In the trunk of your car OR we will have a bag check area for $3 per bag.

What about Parking?

Parking is $10/vehicle and is collected at the gate when you arrive.

What do I bring?

  • Cash or credit card for cool BDB merchandise, bag check, vendor food, race day registration
  • Appropriate footwear (running sneakers recommended). You will get muddy! We find dozens of shoes in the mud pits after the race so tie ’em on good and tight or use some duct tape to keep them on your feet (that’s a tip from the professional OCR people…yip!! duct tape!!) Don’t wear your favorite shirt or running shorts or anything you don’t want getting dirty or ruined.
  • Costumes are highly encouraged.
  • An extra change of clothes & shoes is a good idea.
  • A camera for taking photos
  • Pair of gloves, even goggles can be helpful
  • A big garbage bag for muddy shoes, clothes, etc.
  • A towel for your car seat and for yourself!!

Can I wear a costume?

But, of course! Costumes are highly encouraged. It’s part of what makes the BDB and your experience so fun.

What does family-friendly mean?

It means we want to create a wholesome, healthy, fun event where kids and families feel welcomed. We created a 2k Little Dog course for anyone not wanting to run the full 5K. This first section (2k) is designed for more FUN than RUN… anyone can run it…young kids can do it with help. Before the course escalates in difficulty, there will be a cut off that will be clearly marked!

General guidelines

  • Participants must abide by all instructions given from the race director, race staff, volunteers and medical personnel.
  • Participants understand and acknowledge BIGDOGBRAG is an extreme event and accept all risks associated with the event.
  • Participants must be physically able to complete the course.
  • Participants can register starting at age 5. You know your kids better than we do, so we leave the decision of distance up to you, the parent.
  • Please wear your bib on the front of your clothing/costume. No participant will be allowed to race without an official bib number. Putting the bib on the front also helps you find your pictures after the race!!
  • Videographers and photographers are stationed along the course. Participants agree to allow the event producer to use any pictures or video footage of the event for future promotional purposes.
  • All wheeled devices are strictly prohibited on the course.
  • Please use the provided porta johns…enough said.
  • Registration is closed when the maximum capacity is reached.

General safety

  • BIGDOGBRAG medical personnel may examine any participant who appears to be injured or suffering. The medical personnel may remove any participant from the event if in the opinion of the medical personnel the participant needs to be removed.
  • Participants assume all responsibility for all medical expenses incurred as a result of training and/or participating in the BIGDOGBRAG, including but not limited to hospitalization, ambulance transportation or physician services.

  • We highly recommend participants wear running shoes. Participants should dress appropriately.

COURSE

What if I can’t get over an obstacle or just don’t want to do it?

If you can’t or don’t want to do any particular obstacle, that is perfectly fine. Go at your own pace…no worries! No one will be making you do burpees or penalize you for skipping an obstacle all together…Have fun! You’ll still receive your finisher medal and BIG DOG BRAGGIN’ RIGHTS!

Can I get more info about the obstacles?

The course is uniquely designed to show off the cool terrain of Colorado….rope climbs on Colorado boulders, canyon nets across canyons, actual muddy mud slides (not a blow up slide with dirty water at the bottom), and 25 of the funnest, most unique ways to get you muddy on the planet!!

How long does it take to complete the course?

Faster runners may complete the 5k in about 30 minutes, but most runners will take 60-90 minutes. The 2k course is totally about fun and taking your time to enjoy the obstacles and the mud…it’s a mile of fun, obstacles and mud! Nobody on our staff cares how long it takes you to get done as long as you’re having fun…we’re having fun!

I'm not in tip top shape...can I do this race?

We firmly believe that almost everyone can walk, crawl or jog 3 miles but we have a 1 mile course to make sure ANYONE can do the BIGDOGBRAG! The majority of people walk or jog…. You may have to take breaks…if you have to wallow in a mud pit for a while…please do..take it at your own pace.

Does the course involve swimming?

No swimming, just knee deep mud, crawling in mud, climbing in, through and over mud and possibly falling into 2 feet of water where your head may be submerge briefly…we call it “muddling”.

Will showers be available?

There will be a Dog Wash station to rinse off the worst of it…so you can get into a change of clothes. That does not mean full blown showers with hot water, soap, hair dryers and towels! Remember, this is a mud run in the middle of nowhere so be sure to bring a towel and another set of clothes or something to cover the seats in your car!

Can I run barefoot?

NO! The Terrain is too dangerous for bare feet! Closed toe shoes are best! AND if you want to be sure to finish with both shoes on, you might want to consider duct taping them before you start!!

CHARITY

Who is your Charity?

Challenged Athlete Fund. A $1 donation is collected for every participant at registration but you can raise additional funds to support this awesome organization.

PHOTOS

Where are my photos?

You’ll be getting an email notification telling you where to view them 2-3 days after the race.

How much are photos?

Our photographers will do their best to capture lots of muddy moments on the course so most people get 2-4 pictures (although we cannot guarantee it). These pics can be purchased starting at $2.99 on the website 48 hours after the race. You can download and share as many and as much as you want.
